What Are Vape Batteries?

Every vape, whatever else it looks like, runs on a small rechargeable or single-use lithium battery. It's the one component shared across all three device shapes covered in our guide to every type of e-cigarette, just packaged differently depending on whether it's sealed inside a disposable, built into a pod system, or sitting in refillable hardware.

Battery capacity is measured in milliamp-hours (mAh), the same unit used for phone batteries, and it roughly tracks with how long a device lasts between charges, or how long a sealed disposable's battery lasts before the device is depleted for good. The MR.FOG 45K Switch Pod's main battery is rated at 1,400 mAh, with the pod itself carrying a smaller 300 mAh backup so it can fire on its own when needed. The Vaporesso XROS 5 Mini runs a 1,500 mAh internal battery with 2A USB-C fast charging. A larger mAh rating generally supports more puffs per charge, all else equal, but the coil's power draw and how heavily you use the device both affect real-world battery life just as much as the raw number.

A disposable's battery is sealed inside and never removed, calibrated to run out around the same time as the e-liquid. A pre-filled pod system's battery is rechargeable and reused across many pods, so it's built to a higher cycle count than a disposable's one-time battery needs to be. Refillable hardware works the same way, a rechargeable internal battery you keep charging and reusing indefinitely, alongside whatever coils and e-liquid you cycle through it.

Use the cable that came with the device, or a comparable USB-C cable, rather than an unfamiliar fast-charger, and avoid leaving any device charging unattended for extended periods. Keep devices out of direct sun and hot cars; heat degrades battery performance faster than normal use does, and a hot car specifically can push a sealed device well past the temperature range it was designed for. These are the same practical precautions that apply to any small rechargeable lithium battery, not something unique to vaping devices.
